Struthiomimus

stroo-thee-oh-MY-mus name means “Ostrich mimic”

Built like an ostrich and fast as the wind, this toothless dinosaur was one of the speediest creatures of its age.

This little dinosaur is named "ostrich mimic" for obvious reasons—it looks very bird-like. Struthiomimus, just like its namesake, had a small head, long neck, strong legs, and a toothless beak. It was probably able to run very swiftly after the small lizards and other prey it ate.

Compare for Yourself

This drawing illustrates how similar Struthiomimus looks compared to a modern ostrich. Struthiomimus was about six and a half feet tall, around the same size as an ostrich. The main differences are that Struthiomimus had no feathers, had a long bony tail, and had clawed hands instead of wings. Maybe you can see why some experts think that birds evolved from dinosaurs.

Bird-Like Faces

Bird-Like Faces

Dinosaurs had very different faces. Although these animals lived in different parts of the world at different times, they all lived during the Mesozoic era, the Age of Dinosaurs.

Flyer faceAlthough their faces resemble that of Struthiomimus, Eudimorphodon and Archaeopteryx were both winged reptiles. Many believe Archaeopteryx was the earliest known bird.
Carnivore cousinsStruthiomimus and Troodon had many similarities. Not only do their faces look alike, but they were both small, swift meat-eaters.
